Musical Awareness
Music today is incredibly diverse. Far from the growls of the seemingly inescapable machinery turning the pop industry’s conveyor, one will soon discover that by making that slight extra effort to dig a little deeper, a reef of quality bands and artists line the backbone of music.
Finding your place with music, either as a consumer or as an artist, very much depends upon your personal approach. Some are content with whatever is served up in the day-to-day media. Some look to other less obvious resources; late night radio and specialist TV shows and magazines. Some of us aren’t content that what they’ve found is unspoilt by any packaging unless they’ve gone out and found it themselves. Many are introduced to new music by word of mouth. Combine all of these, and it starts to become apparent that if you are prepared to go the extra mile, a casket of new music is there to be unlocked.
Musicians also vary in their approach to their art. Some disregard whatever anyone says; some of these people turn out to be pioneers. Some turn out to be arrogant nobodies. Many pander to whatever trend is being set by the industry and their media puppets; many become rich because of it. Most don’t. Some play what they want, yet understand the psychology of the consumer and the way that the industry works too; some of these people also create great music to compliment their shrewdness. Some don’t.
Being aware of yourself and your musical attitudes is good. Being aware of yourself and all the others around you is great.
